Four local freelancers share the secrets to running a successful solo business.
With Dylan Jones, Tracy Meiners, Ilanna Barkusky, and Anne McColl
For many creatives, the full-time freelance career, with its ultimate flexibility, is the ideal gig. But launching a freelance business takes accounting, business, and sales skills far beyond most creative professionals’ comfort zone.
Join us again at Creative Space on Wednesday, September 7, to hear from four local freelancers who will demystify the freelance path, and share their secrets for launching a successful, fulfilling, and lucrative solo business in San Diego.
Meet the creatives:
Creating simple, timeless brands that cut through the clutter is something that Dylan Jones has been doing for more than 20 years. Finding strategic solutions to complex challenges and helping propel businesses forward with strong, conceptual design is what makes him tick. With a specialty in hospitality design and consumer packaged goods, he’s worked for an array of clients across all industries, including Sipwell Wine, Improv Cocktails, Ballast Point Brewing., Sony, Behr, Qualcomm, Hard Rock Hotel, Shure Microphones, Intel, Cutwater Spirits, Pizza Port Brewing and Taylor Guitars.
Tracy Meiners is a San Diego Creative Director/Designer passionate about collaborating and creating unique and meaningful brand experiences, with an eye for detail and the little things that help craft something memorable. Over the past 25 years, she has worked for prominent design studios across the country, including Miriello Grafico, VM+A, and Selbert Perkins Design. She currently works client-direct and collaborates with top design and branding agencies in San Diego.
Ilanna Barkusky was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, before finding her way to Southern California. Now, as a director, photographer, and drone pilot, she is deeply passionate about creating sports-focused visual stories. Over the past few years, she has worked with global brands, including Red Bull, Roxy, and the LA Clippers.
Anne McColl is a copywriter who helps brands tell stories that stick. Her mission is to help organizations banish B.S. (that’s Business Speak) and learn to communicate like humans. As The Best D@mn Copywriter, Anne has collaborated with studios, agencies, and brands like the San Diego Zoo, Hawaii Visitors Bureau, Salesforce, and Peninsula Papagayo.
